KENTUCKIANA CINEMATOGRAPHY CLUB MEMBERSHIP

The Kentuckiana Cinematography Club (KCC): was created in November of 2005 after having seen a tremendous growth of "run-away films" (those leaving Hollywood to be filmed elsewhere) being produced in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

WHO?

The Kentuckiana Cinematography Club (KCC): is open to persons 18 years of age and older that are interested in learning about cinematography. No previous technical background or experience is necessary. We have members from both eastern and western Kentucky as well as southern Indiana and southern Ohio, so you can meet a diverse group and network with them. Our club encourages networking and collaboration as many learning opportunities can flourish in that environment. Always remember to bring business cards, photo shots, and resumes, as you are welcome to meet others with similar aspirations. We want to welcome everyone possible, but also will be restricted to the size of the meeting room at the restaurant. We already outgrew the first two restaurants.

WHAT?

The Kentuckiana Cinematography Club (KCC): will have two major portions to our meetings:
1. "Tech Session" (where we have a guest speaker teach about his/her cinematography equipment used to produce their movies);
2. Shorts (where we get to view a short to full-length movie and speak to that guest speaker about his/her movie-making process. Each month, we will schedule two different guest speakers.

WHEN?

We will meet monthly and the dates will be posted on this webpage. As we will be meeting at restaurants/coffee house type locations, the meeting date and time might fluctuate. We still strive to always use the same location for consistency, but continue to view this page for updates if a change becomes necessary.

WHERE?

LOCAL RESTAURANTS: CHECK THIS MONTH'S SCHEDULE TO SEE WHERE WE WILL MEET. Please arrive hungry, as they are kind enough to allow us the usage of their room with the expectation that our members will be purchasing a meal there. This menu has an extensive range of delicious food!!!

WHY?

Kentucky has many fresh locations to place within your cinematographic stories that have never been filmed before to be broadcast on the motion picture screen. Kentucky does not have the politics of Hollywood to stifle the enthusiasm of new cinematographers. Kentucky does have the Kentucky Film Office to assist cinematographers in making their pictures within the state. You should invest some time in reading all of the benefits they can offer you for filming in Kentucky!

HOW?

Participants should be interested in learning new skills; learning how to operate a wide variety of equipment; be open to learning how to organize their dream movies into a realistic movie that is likely to be made; participants should be interested in sharing knowledge while helping one another; participants should bring paper and pen/pencil to take notes during our meetings as you will want to retain what you learn each month; and participants should have fun.

HOW MUCH?

We will not be charging any dues for membership within the immediate future. Our realization is that college students, independent filmmakers, or even senior citizens are on limited budgets and have to spend it sparingly. Their money likely will be spent on food at our meeting or the gas to drive to our meetings, so we want to encourage you to attend the meetings and patronize our host restaurant.

HOW LONG?

As this organization is just starting, we anticipate having meetings that could range from 90 minutes to two hours. Each month will afford new guest speakers to talk about different equipment, show different films (from shorts to full feature movies), impart skills and knowledge, so it will be difficult to pinpoint the precise length of our meetings, however, we fully intend to start our meeting on time. Please arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of time as this will be a networking opportunity for you to meet others with similar interests and you can get your first plate or two of food. Always patronize our host restaurant as they are generous to allow us to meet for free, so please do not just order a water.

LISTINGS: LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL EVENTS
(Non-KCC events)

We welcome the posting of events on our webpages of other clubs, organizations, production companies, film festivals, training sessions, etc. There are a few expectations to be fulfilled PRIOR TO POSTING YOUR EVENTS.

  • Your posting gives at least one week prior notice to visitors of our webpage. In other words, please do not send an event that will occur on the day after you send your note to us. We need a day or two to place events online. The old saying is that "An emergency on your part does not necessarily constitute an emergency on our part."

  • Provide full dates for events. In other words, never abbreviate your dates because 8/8/8 can be misunderstood. We only are interested in precise information as it means our readers will not show up to events on the wrong days or wrong times. E.g. 8 August 2008 is how we ask that you submit your dates. The European or military style of dates ensures that the audience will show up at the right time on the right day. We list times in both the 12 and 24-hour clock to post times.

  • We ask that you provide a webpage for our readers to view your updated information online so it is not necessary for KCC to constantly update our pages if your club/organization must make last minute changes to your events.

  • We ask that if you have contact numbers and exact addresses for events and parking, so please provide those too. The readers of this page often ask us for this information and then we have to follow up with the non-KCC organization and all of that can become taxing. By providing us your webpage and thorough details, you event should be able to be posted after 1-2 emails between us.

  • ONLY send us your event(s) AFTER you can answer the following questions: "Who, What, When, Where, Why, & How?" We strive to list the events of other clubs and organizations that are FULLY PREPARED to announce their planned events. In our brief past, we have gotten a submission an incredibly ill-prepared club that only sent us their rules for submission; however, they left off the dates of submission; they failed to tell us the dates for their festival events; they failed to tell us the price for submitting films; they failed to be courteous in their interactions with us upon questioning their disorganized flow of information and they told us to either post the information or not, but to avoid giving them advice. In good conscience, we cannot and would not encourage anyone to participate in such a disorganized event being run so poorly as that would be a bad reflection on KCC whether we have a disclaimer for these links or not. This new section about submitting events has been created out of the exhaustive and unpleasant experiences of someone that clearly was neither "organized" nor "in control" of his own club. Leadership means understanding that others will help you promote your club and organization, but only if you have been considerate enough to be fully prepared when you submit your events to be posted to the KCC pages. Rudeness will never be tolerated!!! KCC is not "taking to raise" anyone. That said, we do strive to embrace the learning opportunities of welcoming mature adults to motion picture industry. We also strive to afford up-and-coming (professionally oriented) cinematographers the ability to present their body of work.

    USE COMPLETE WEBPAGE LINKS

I want to encourage you to always use "http://" with all of your links as it means that web browsers and email systems are more likely to process and activate a link. It also saves me time from having to put that into the links when I write my pages and try to link folks to your events.

    TIMES, DATES, AND TIME ZONES

As we have folks from around the world on the KCC list and reading our webpages, it is always good to include EST (Eastern Standard Time) or EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) for notes to ensure people show up to your events on time. As so much of what is on the net is outdated, I always include the full date in the European style so we can let folks know these are future oriented events. Take a look at it to see how I use the dates and times. 0900 EST 4 February 2008 can only mean only mean one precise time and everyone can show up on time. The date 07 06 2008 could be one of two different dates that are about a month apart from one another.

Abbreviations for time (correct and incorrect usages)(only two are correct)

  • Capitalized "AM" (without periods) means: "amplitude modulation, master of arts."

  • Lower case "a.m." (with periods) means: "ante meridiem." (Latin: before noon)

  • Lower case "am" (without periods) means: "America, American, americium."

  • Capitalized "PM" (without periods) means: "paymaster, police magistrate, postmaster, postmortem, prime minister, provost marshal."

  • Lower case "p.m." (with periods) means: "post meridiem." (Latin: afternoon)

  • Lower case "pm" (without periods) means: "premium."

If you are sending your events, please you the full and complete times with the proper abbreviation as it takes a wealth of time each month to updates hundreds of events when poorly written. Many people use these points to decide on whether your events seem well organized and welcoming of persons from outside of your own city. The World Wide Web is a global opportunity to welcome people, but you must respect and realize that others live outside of your time zone. Use the proper abbreviations to illustrate you are aware of these issues and that you are well organized.
