DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH

International Gay Pilots Association(IGPA)

BACKGROUND

The International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) was originally known as the "Fincastle Astronautics Group" was established in December 2007 for the GLBTI aviation, aeronautics, aerospace, and astronautics community to have a social organization within the region formerly known as Fincastle County, Virginia. That region included most of Kentucky, West Virginia, portions of Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. As Canada is only about 4.5 hours away, we are an easy drive south of the border. Our meetings will primarily be held in Louisville, Kentucky.

As there is a need and desire to have an international gay pilots association that meets the needs and desires to have events in the core of America, so all members travel to centralized events and minimize the costs.

NEWS

NEWS: IGPA's very own, Actor: Brennan James Callan is in Walt Disney's film to be released in October 2010. WALT DISNEY'S "Secretariat" motion picture.

1:30/2:31 (Look for him toward the back of the room, two people to the right of the spot light--in a dark suit with a light blue shirt and dark blue tie and a Fedora hat).

2:23/2:31 (Look for him toward the right side of the press box--, two people are just below his face--in a dark suit with a light blue shirt and dark blue tie and no Fedora hat this time).

Brennan appears on the film as both an "Upper Class Gentleman" (appears in the Grandstands and in the Paddock areas of Churchill Downs) and as a "Sports Writer/Photographer" (appears in the tunnel as the horses emerge onto the race track at Churchill Downs, and Brennan is the absolute last person (photographer) seen as the "Secretariat" horse & jockey enter the track and the steady-cam follows the horse onto the track. Four all four days of the shoot at Churchill Downs, Brennan was in the same suit, so you will recognize him. Everyone had to wear the same cloths due to constituently.

As multiple angles were shot of each scene, Brennan appears in multiple angles of these shots.

This film was shot at Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA (home of the Kentucky Derby); in Keeneland Race Track--in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, and then other locations in Louisiana as well as non-race track locations in those cities. See the film for a full list of credits.

More history of Bowman Field

"It officially began on 12 May 1920, when A.H. Bowman formed a partnership with flier Robert H. Gast and set up operations at the site on Taylorsville Road. Shortly thereafter, Gast left Louisville to pursue a more adventurous aviation career. Gast served in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps and barnstormed after World War I. W. Sidney Park became Bowman's partner in the Bowman-Park Aero Company in May 1921-one of the first firms to specialize in aerial photography. They rented 50 acres of the Von Zedwitz estate from the government, and this became the nucleus for what is now Bowman Field.

Later in the year Bowman's lease on the property was taken over by the Army. The airfield then became the home of the 465th Army Pursuit Squadron, Army Air Service Reserve. Bowman Field was officially dedicated on August 25, 1923, and the Squadron remained the airfield's principal tenant for the next five years.xlii The primary aircraft flown by the 465th until at least 1927 was the Curtiss JN Jenny.xliii The commander of the 465th was Louisville native Captain Ledcreich Stuart Vance, Air Corps Reserve.

Sometime in 1930 the 465th Pursuit Squadron was re-designated the 325th Observation Squadron, Army Air Corps Reserve.xliv One source cited the establishment of the 325th as early as 1922 but this may be an error.xlv According to information provided by the Air Force Reserve Historian’s Office, the 325th Observation Squadron, Organized Reserves was constituted and assigned to 100th Division, Fifth Corps Area on 24 Jun 1921. It was organized at Cincinnati, OH in Feb 1923. Relieved from assignment to 100th Division on 21 Feb 1929 but remained assigned to Fifth Corps Area. It was relocated to Louisville, KY in July 1931; and to Bowman Field, KY on 21 Dec 1933. The 325th was consolidated on 19 Nov 1931 with the 325th Aero Squadron (Service), which was organized at Kelly Field, TX on 10 Dec 1917, served in England from 20 Aug-27 Nov 1918, and was demobilized at Garden City, NY on 19 Dec 1918. The 325th Observation Squadron was disbanded on 31 May 1942.xlvi

The 465th Pursuit Squadron, Organized Reserves, was organized at Louisville, KY, and assigned to Fifth Corps Area on 15 Oct 1921. It was demobilized on 1 Oct 1933.xlvii The 100th Division was originated and activated at Camp Bowie, Texas in July 1918. It was inactivated on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. The Division was demobilized a year later. In June 1921 the Headquarters of the 100th Division was reconstituted, with the headquarters at Wheeling, West Virginia, and the 400th Infantry Regiment in Louisville.xlviii

The club's founding fathers included pilots returning from the War who found that there was no place to continue their passion for flying, and businessmen who saw the potential of aviation beyond military applications. In 1923 the Aero Club was given an allotment of funds by Jefferson County and the city of Louisville to rent and maintain an airport at this site. The number of club members started growing Dedication of the Army Air Corps Hangar at Bowman Field in 1932. Courtesy Kentucky Heritage Council.

A Brief History of the Kentucky Air National Guard — Fortune Favors the Brave
15 immediately and some of them also joined the Pursuit Squadron. Thirty members of the Aero Club spent a weekend at "Camp Knox" (now better known as Fort Knox) dismantling an old army hangar which they brought back to Bowman and erected as the quarters of the Reserve Air Corps Squadron.

The Aero Club ran Bowman Field for the first six years of its existence. The members took care of maintenance, building, and anything that arose. In 1923 they put on the first air show in Louisville, with an attendance estimated by the Courier-Journal at 12,000. One history of the club describes the various air shows that took place in the 1920s. It says, "The most outstanding of these flying exhibitions was the one where Lieutenants Jimmie Doolittle, Alec Pearson, and Brookley tied their planes together with string and took off and landed in formation without breaking the string between their ships.

By 1928 it was clear that Bowman Field was outgrowing its volunteer status, and the members of the Aero Club could no longer keep it maintained and manned as it needed to be. The state legislature created the Louisville and Jefferson County Air Board and authorized the issuance of $750,000 in bonds to buy the entire Von Zedwitz estate. Part of the estate is now Bowman Field and part is Seneca Park.

The first chairman of the new Air Board was Aero Club member Addison Lee. He and five others were appointed to the bipartisan board in October, 1928. They were the forerunners of the current Regional Airport Authority.xlix Bowman Field is touted as the longest continuously operating, general aviation airport in the United States.l

The U. S. Army Air Corps held a major Anti-Aircraft Exercises in 1933 in the Fort Knox Area. On 20 Apr 1933 twelve P-16 airplanes of the 94th Pursuit Squadron based at Selfridge Field, Michigan were flown to Patterson Field, Ohio, for use of the 3rd Attack Group as attack aircraft during Air Corps – Anti-Aircraft exercises.

The aircraft took part in mock raids on Fort Knox from 15 to 27 May 1933. Fort Knox retaliated by sending up pursuit ships from Bowman Field in Louisville due to the poor condition of Godman Field. Brigadier General Julian R. Lindsey, Fort Knox Commanding General and Colonel Daniel Van Voorhis Commanding Officer of Fort Knox’s 1st Cavalry Regiment were in charge of the defense of Fort Knox.li The exercise also incorporated the 325th Observation Squadron, Organized Reserve, from Selfridge Field consisting of 26 Reserve Officer Pilots and Observers, under command of Captain Locke, Air-Reserve, and accompanied by Captain Bushrod Hoppin and First Lieutenant Stanton T. Smith, active duty unit instructors, and four enlisted instructors, 13 O-1 F “Falcon” airplanes, were attached to the Group for duration of exercise as Group Headquarters Reconnaissance unit.lii"

Future Events

If any of you would like to tour around Bowman Field, I will be happy to take you around what was the WWII airport that had the most air traffic in the US.

Bowman field was where the glider pilots were trained. Those pilots went on to conduct the raid on Normandy the night before the naval landing. We will meet at the former control tower/Administration building lobby that is in the center of that historic building seen below: [Please RSVP so if you are running late, we can wait for you.]

History of Bowman Field

Our events are near to the local airfields (Bowman Field KLOU and Louisville International Airport KSDF) to encourage members to fly into the city and participate in our social meetings. A further goal will be to pick up those members and drive them to the restaurant so it would not be necessary to rent a car.

Upcoming Clearances

Most of our fly-ins are designed for VFR (visual flight rules) to enable as large a group as possible to participate, and because no one is particularly interested in flying to a lunch/picnic in rain and fog. We cannot provide/issue you any weather reports; rather, you should contact the Flight Service Station (FSS) for Bowman Field (KLOU). If someone tells you that our weather is "fabulous," you must recognize that is simply their own opinion and cannot be used for filing your flight plan.

We sincerely hope all of you can and will attend.

International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) Membership

International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) is dedicated to providing an enjoyable, social atmosphere for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersexual members of the aviation, aerospace, aeronautic, astronautic, and astronomy community that are 18 years of age and older. Our future members will include, but not be limited to pilots (private, commercial, student and ATP), controllers, A&P mechanics, flight attendants and other aviation enthusiasts. We plan on holding social gatherings and fly-ins each month in Kentucky and surrounding states. We apologize for anyone under the age of 18; but you can check your local listings for GLBTI organizations such as PFLAG, but we are unable to meet with anyone underage! We also plan on taking tours of aviation/aerospace museums, science museums, planetariums, related manufacturing plants, air shows, and other related events.

International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) Dues

As we not anticipation of the collection of any dues at this time. Fuel costs so much as would the use of a car or plane to attend social functions; so at this point, keep it free keeps it simple! We are not attempting to duplicate any functions of NGPA, other regional clubs, rather, our goal is to create a more centralized opportunity for IGPA members to socialize with one another.

How much do events cost?

There is no membership or event fee. Members, or guests, who participate in an event are expected to share in fuel expense when the event involves flying. Beyond that each member and guest is responsible for their own expenses. These would generally include meals, entertainment, accomodations, and personal shopping.

International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) Employment

An additional benefit of a close association of the aviation, aerospace, astronautics, astronomy, and aeronautical community is that we can help one another to find viable employment for companies that welcome diversity and embrace uniqueness.

International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) Education

As the group grows, another function could include providing educational courses. The main challenge with this is that everyone is at a different phase of life and education, so how can we identify the needs of the members to determine what courses would best assist the needs of the members? We will explore that in time.

International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA) Webpages

In the future, additional webpages will be created as time and needs permit us to do so. Your suggestions and ideas are welcome. As the NGPA already exists and they already have threaded discussions; no goal to duplicate their forums will be accomplished. We would rather encourage you to participate in NGPA in addition to attending our actual events.

CARD CARRYING: International Gay Pilots Association (IGPA)

Eventually, we will need to create a membership card so each of you can be a "Card carrying IGPA member" and show that to all of your friends and family with pride and distinction.

Subject: RSEV Design Team
The Reusable Space Exploration Vehicle Project

At this time the RSEV project is looking for information on aerospace engineers and propulsion system experts who would be interested in supporting or signing on to the project when funding becomes available. The RSEV project is looking to build to teams; a Design Team and a Propulsion Team.

The Design Team which will focus on the research and development of the concept design, management of the project and organizing supportand experiments.

The Propulsion Team which will focus on the research and development of the ship's propulsion and power generation systems. For more information please visit the RSEV Project website below and contact the project president. If you would be interested in signing onto one of the teams when the time comes or would like to support the project in some other manner, please let me know.

In the near future I am looking to expand the RSEV project's status to that of a Non-Profit Organization. Awaiting funds and information to fill out paperwork and meet requirements. Once I have an idea of who would sign onto my Design Team, I will take the next step towards gaining regular financial support from organization and government sources.

Here you will find exquisite French cuisine, prepared with only the finest, freshest ingredients, combined with relaxed, first-class service and an intimate, 1940s art-deco ambiance (plush banquettes, burled-wood walls, and closely spaced, white-clothed tables) reminiscent of the Caf from the movie "Casablanca."

Sky Signs, LLC. can assemble the traditional red letters the write your sign in the sky or they can pull an aerial banner that has images or prints on them. Their plane is capable of pulling three different signs between landing. They use an arrestor hook system from the plane that grabs the leading lines that allow the hook to connect with the sign that follows the plane after the pilot regains his speed. It is an impressive sight to see when they pull the signs.

Eligible applicants are invited to apply for one or more scholarships. Applications for each scholarship must be submitted on the official application form, which is available from the Foundation.s web site http://www.icasfoundation.org/. Submissions may be made via e-mail or mailed directly to International Council of Air Shows Foundation, 751 Miller Drive, S.E. Suite F-4 Leesburg, VA 20175. The deadline for submitting applications is 1 July 2006. Scholarship recipients are chosen by a panel of family and friends of those for whom the scholarships are named. Scholarship winners will be notified by 10 August 2006.
